Now the good part. We were both pressed for time this year and we had not made arrangements for a boat anywhere. When we finally started to work making calls we found that practically all owners of boats were very reluctant to rent over night, as they all had had people take boats over night and caused damage to them. We have been doing this for a long time. We know how to take care of a boat on Moosehead. But we could not find a boat rental. We went anyway. We were both concerned as it is a five hour plus drive for us. We stopped, as usual, at the place on top of the hill going down into Greenville to do our shopping and the guy there told us we should try The Birches. On the way down the hill into Greenville, we called The Birches. Marsha answered. A totally delightful person. A very pleasant conversation and, she said she had a boat for us. We drove up the west side of the Lake, across the Moose River and found the Birches.
We bounced around for a few years never having a great experience, and began some talks on getting a new place to go but frankly, there is no more beautiful a place, I believe, in this country than Moosehead. In all modesty, I have traveled much of this country and the world. Moosehead is a very special place.
What a great surprise for us. The Birches is the best place in all of Maine. It is the quintessential down home Maine resort. The newest thing you will find there is the cups in the gift shop. I guess I should not say that. The boat and the motor (a 20hp Yamaha 4 stroke) were new too! Maybe not brand new but compared to what we were used to, new. The equipment performed flawlessly. We left the camp ground one morning and had breakfast back at The Birches. Delicious. Robert, the boat master informed us, if we ate breakfast there "that ain't camping" . A great guy and certainly he new his boats, and was proud of his fleet. And there is a fleet. Just about any size and power one could want. We purposely did not have a drink at the bar (attached to the great restaurant) as we wanted to save that experience for next summer. I could go on and on, but i'm getting dirty looks from my boss as I think he knows I am not working. The Birches is the GREATEST and we will be back.
My son and I have been camping on Moosehead Lake every summer since he was 12. He was 33 this year on the trip. We rented a boat from the same place for 15 years. The equipment never changed and the last two years at that place, the equipment failed us. Trust me, you don,t want to be out on Moosehead Lake with bad equipment. We left what we thought was our old friend, a friend we were loyal to, but he abandoned us in a time of great need. We won't be back.
Beautiful location on Moosehead Lake. We visited during foliage season, and there are plenty of birches to admire. The downside was it was also during one of the moose hunting seasons, so plenty of hunters driving up and down the dirt roads in their pickups, creating clouds of dust. The lodge is charming, the staff is friendly. I didn't realize you had to share a bathroom in the lodge. 4 rooms to a bathroom seems a bit much. Also, the rooms are right above the bar so it can be a bit noisy in your room, but things quited down by 10 at least. The rooms and bathroom show their age but things were clean. The restaurant had some winners and losers for the 2 dinners and breakfasts we ordered there.
